I served as the CTO of a startup called PeckApp, a contact sharing app, for two years. I was the lead of design and tech for the two year run in which we iterated over multiple versions, spent time as a resident startup at 1871 Chicago, and won an entrepreneurship grant from Providence University.
Code
PeckApp’s contact sharing process evolved over time from Bluetooth to WiFi to a simple QR code.
I utilized location services and distance calculations in order to determine who is standing next
to each other with the app. Initial versions utilized the iPhone’s gyroscope and velocity metrics to
calculate angle of movement and speed to mimic Bump’s technology.
I utilized Firebase and MySQL in the Swift app to support thousands of users in colleges and
universities across the country.
Storytelling
The idea came from the desire to easily meet new people in college since all three of us
cofounders were freshmen at the time. We user tested with the people around us, iterated
on our product, and evolved from a social app to supporting Providence University’s biggest
job fair in March of 2020 in which 100+ companies and thousands of students attended.
Users were integral to our design and different evolutions. We told their stories
through our designs.
Design
Our design from the beginnning needed to serve our users. We had to figure out how to design
an app that worked from a professional setting to the basement of a frat house. The design of
the tech beneath it also had to follow this template.
At 1871 in Chicago we worked with multiple teams and design agencies to arrive at our final
version.
